Hello,

My name is Wendy Murrow and I am the speech therapist that will be working with your child this year.  By now I probably have met most of you and your children.  I know the first session with me can be a little intimidating for your child, but as we build rapport, I am sure they will feel more at ease and hopefully even excited to come to speech.

Every month, I hope to have the time to write you a brief newsletter to introduce you to the themes we will be talking about in speech class.  In it you will also find finger plays, nursery rhymes, songs, book recommendations and carry-over ideas.  This way you will be able to stay on top of what is happening in therapy.

If your child’s speech articulation skills are impacted, then I will first get them acquainted with some simple lip and tongue movements that they will practice with a mirror.  When your child has practiced with me a few times, I will send home a little coloring, exercise book home for them to practice with you.  The exercises are presented in fun rhymes that you can read out loud to them and model for them.  I recommend getting a small mirror from the dollar store for their practice.  We won’t do all of the exercises in the book, but will reinforce the production of their target sounds in a fun way.

At the same time, we will also rehearse grammatical forms that the children are having difficulty with.  If your child has difficulty with pronouns (i.e. he/she/his/hers/yours, etc.),  I will use various games to using these forms in a natural way.  Games are the primary way in which children learn and it is the form of therapy that I use to teach.

I would ask that we keep our conversations, before and after therapy short and very non-specific, as I would like to be respectful of your child’s confidentiality and stay on-track with my schedule. If you need to get a hold of me for any reason,  or if you have more specific questions about the session, please call or text me at 951-285-7552 .  You can also email me at WMURROW@tvusd.k12.ca.us.

Thank you!

"How Full Is Your Bucket?" is being read by the Jackson staff.  This is the "grown-up" version of the book "Have You Filled a Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud.  JES teachers have been using this book since the beginning of the last school year as "A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids".  If you would like to purchase the book, please follow this link:

Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial disease that is considered an epidemic as of June 2010 by the California Department of Health. We have 1496 cases statewide and 53 cases to date in Riverside. Five deaths were reported due to pertussis this year. Symptoms are similar to the common cold, but worsen over time and can last for two months.

This disease is preventable and we can avoid spread by having pertussis shots. All young children should be immunized against whooping cough, and all other vaccinations should be updated.  Other kids who completed the series of 4-5 doses when they were younger might need a booster especially when they are at the age of 10-12 years old. Anyone who suspects they have whooping cough should wash their hands after coughing or sneezing, and stay home when sick.

You need to see a doctor for evaluation and might need ab antibiotic to treat pertussis.
